RealNetworks to Microsoft: Try this one on
RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser has mixed it up with Microsoft over
the years without ever getting knocked out of the ring. That's
why his company's decision to offer open-source versions of some
of its technology is so intriguing.

Glaser calls the move the most significant announcement for the
company since the debut of RealNetworks' Net audio player seven
years ago. He also knows it's not a panacea. Just ask Netscape
and Sun Microsystems, which also tested open-source waters with
decidedly mixed results.
But it's worth a try. The theory is to outflank Microsoft by
enlisting the legion of open-source enthusiasts, who consider
Redmond the enemy. Microsoft will doubtless try to muster a
response. The company may be positively allergic to anything that
smacks of open source, but it also understands that RealNetworks'
end game is to sell more servers. And that, paraphrasing the
immortal bank robber Willie Sutton, is where the money is. In the
meantime, tech world, get ready to rumble.

Glaser first has to convince the open-source community to buy
into his "layer cake" approach, where some code is proprietary
and some is not. That's going to be a tough sell, according to
Open Source Initiative co-founder Bruce Perens, who says
RealNetworks needs to rethink its position if it's to block the
advance of Microsoft's Media Player.
