To whom it may concern:
Dear Sirs/Madams,
I would like to bring to your attention a (mis)use of the term "Open
Source" which has been made in the context of the "Open Source Product
Excellence Award", announced at LinuxWorld Expo 2003:
http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/linuxworldny03/V33/press.cvn?p_id=12
The term "Open Source" is used extensively throughout this
announcement, starting from the title of the award. I was a bit
perplexed when, skimming throught the winners of the various
categories, I found the following software products:
- Best Network/Server Application: SuSE - Linux OpenExchange Server
- Best Developer Tools: IBM - Websphere Studio Application Developer
V.5
- Best Data Storage Solution: IBM - Tivoli Storage Manager
- Best Sys Admin Tools: SCO Group - Volution Manager
A bit of research revealed that none of these applications has an
OSI-compatible license.
Shouldn't OSI discourage using the term "Open Source" in such a
blatantly imprecise way?
Feel free to contact me for any inquiry.
Best regards,
--
