Hello,

attached is the discussion maintained between my company and a public
servant of the E.C. about to receive my documentation in OpenDocument
format.

This is an example of how public administrations are forced to accept
our documentation in OpenDocument (ISO/IEC 26300)... and, at the end, a
way to get them using it.

We should repeat this with every public administration (at least in
E.U.) in a way that takes advantage of the net effect and forces them to
use frequently OpenDocument. At the end, OpenDocument should be for them
an absolutely normal file format and, foremost, the official one in some
time.

   Best regards,
     Alberto.

Dear Sir,

This is just to confirm that I could open your document without further
problems and we will include your contribution in our analysis.

Kind regards,

As of 9 May 2006 the Commission's e-mail addresses have changed.
The new address format to be used is forename.name a ec.europa.eu.
My new e-mail address therefore is: kerstin.ringler-jacob a ec.europa.eu.
The old addresses will still be valid until May 2007.

Dear Ms. Ringler,

I personally just tested that the document correctly opens in
different computer and operative systems from my office. I'm sending it
again anyway to prevent any possible problem in the e-mail transport.
You should be able to open it with any unzipper (uncompressed)
independently of if you can read it or not.

With the aim to help you and your technical team, I precise that the
document was saved in OpenDocument format (.odt MIME extension), that
is, ISO/IEC 26300, the only legal standard format for office documents
existing currently. You can officially read about this here:

http://www.iso.org/iso/en/commcentre/pressreleases/2006/Ref1004.html

Also, you can check that this format can be currently used, at least,
by the following office suites:

Sun StarOffice for Windows, Linux and Solaris operative systems
	http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/index.jsp
	(license cost $69.95)
OpenOffice.org for Windows, Linux and *BSD operative systems
	http://www.openoffice.org (installable for free)
KOffice for Linux and Mac OS X (Apple)
	http://www.koffice.org (installable for free)
NeoOffice for Mac OS X (Apple)
	http://www.neooffice.org (installable for free)

Indeed, you can open it freely using the following web service (a word
processor) provided by Google:
	http://www.writely.com (also for free)

And from here you can get a lot of tools to manipulate and open it
(including a plug-in for MS-Office):
  http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=OpenDocument

Last, here you can check the whole list of office applications that
support or will support soon this open & standard document format (in
summary, almost all the industry except one company):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument_software

And more info about this standard format for office applications can be
found here in example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opendocument

Where, indeed, you can check that this format was recommended not long
ago by yourself, the European Commission, in the Valoris Report that you
can obtain from your website here:

http://europa.eu.int/idabc/servlets/Doc?id=17982

So, please, I kindly insist you to accept the documentation in the
official format that I've sent, since, from our professional point of
view of experts in open standards matters, we think it is the most
correct and precise and, on the other side, is the only being used in my
company for some years now.

Otherwise, in case that this continues being impossible for you, please,
just propose us any alternative format to deliver to you.

Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
