================
We have volunteers who want to do a serious outreach, to get people to email
Commissioners, Council people, and to cc their MEPs regarding the software
patent situation.
We need you to help by identifying the following information for your
country. Please send your information to this list, me, the bxl list, or
Hartmut. Also see the list of participants from a past "Competitiveness
Council" meeting, and see whether these seem to be at least some of the
right people.
Names of the government bodies ("ministries," "agencies") that appoint
people to:
1) the EU Commission
2) the EU Council
3) Names of several different people from each body who deal with software
patents, and their email addresses -- their appointed contact, plus some
others (above them, or in other committees related to technology or
industrial policy or "intellectual property"). You can tell what committees
they're on, too.
4) Names and contact info, particularly email, for MEPs
5) Also, specific contacts at your country's Patent Office, with emails.
6) If you know any other special contacts who are supposed to be serving the
public in this matter, provide those as well.
7) Plus if your national government has legislative committees related to
competition or technology or "intellectual property," names and emails for
those
The point is to send emails to Council people, with cc's to other agencies
and legislators, so they can see that all parties have been notified.
We will be able to set up a web page where people can click on their
country, compose an email (we don't believe in boilerplate, standardized
messages), and click send. But moreso, to continually identify new groups
of people who would be concerned, in every country in Europe, whether
academia, technology or software, business, activist groups, etc., and get
them to forward the link.
This will serve to supplement more reasoned approaches by direct lobbying,
to demonstrate strong public concern. Mostly we want to say that the EU
Parliament has spoken, has told the truth to the Commission's duplicity, and
it's time to quit playing games and face the truth about software.
Thank you
Seth Johnson
"Competitiveness Council" participants:
The following might help identify the right agencies, some of the right
people. You can try googling, using the names of agencies these people come
from, and see whether they seem to be the right agencies -- and then who the
best contact is there:
