FINNISH SOFTWARE ENTREPRENEURS VOTE NO TO SOFTWARE PATENTS

Autotalo, Finland, 2004-04-02

The Software Entrepreneurs Society, an association of the owners of
Finnish software houses, rejected the idea of software patents in a
discussion forum in Helsinki last Monday. Over 60% of the software
entrepreneurs attending the forum voted "no" to software patents in
Europe.

"I am very pleased with this result. I hope our parliament takes
notice when it decides Finland's position on European Software
Patents. Unfortunately the result came too late to be considered by
the financial committee, who have already issued a recommendation in
favor of software patents", commented Mr. Santeri Kannisto, a member
of the board of the Software Entrepreneurs Society and the managing
director of SOT Finnish Software Engineering Ltd.

Dr. Smets-Solanes, CEO of Nexedi.com, a producer of enterprise ressource
planning software, was a guest speaker at the forum. He spoke about his
own software and business method patents, which he has obtained for
defensive purposes in recent years. While these patents may one day be
needed for bargaining with ERP competitors like SAP and Microsoft, they do
not offer protection against predators who do not produce software.

"The result of the vote suggests that software patents are seen as more of
a threat than an opportunity, that patenting will discourage invention. I
believe this is a timely discussion, and one that will continue in a
lively manner in various forums", said Mr. Pekka Ruusunen, chairman of the
Software Entrepreneurs Society.

Prior to voting, the forum attended a series of presentations and a panel
discussion where representatives of Nokia, Kolster, Tekes, Innofin argued
the case for software patents. Dr. Smets-Solanes and Mikko Välimäki, a
researcher at the Helsinki University of Technology, presented the
opposing view.
